In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice.

Die Zehn Gebote nach Martin Luthers Kleinem Katechismus. Bei der Zählung der Gebote gibt es im Judentum und in den christlichen Kirchen unterschiedliche Traditionen. Die hier wiedergegebene Fassung folgt der lutherischen und römisch-katholischen Tradition. Eine andere Zählung ergibt sich dort, wo das Bilderverbot - "Du sollst dir kein Bildnis machen" - als zweites Gebot aufgeführt wird, so in der anglikanischen, reformierten und orthodoxen Tradition. Dort werden dann "neuntes" und "zehntes" Gebot als ein Gebot verstanden.
